Artist Statement:
This project takes its inspiration from the murals that Ilya Bolotowsky created for the Williamsburg Houses in 1939 (that are now housed nearby in the Brooklyn Museum). The murals were the first non-objective public murals commissioned in the United States. This work seeks to build on that rich heritage with an image that combines linear abstraction with a fanciful cityscape. Tilted at a 45-degree angle, the image tips its hat to Russian Constructivism, while accommodating the unique shape of the pinwheel on which it will be displayed.
