Artist Statement:
Every tree stump holds within its pattern a blueprint of history and condition. A tree’s health, its struggles, and its surrounding elements are all conveyed throughout the inner markings of its stump. Through my artistic process, I strive to honor and archive each tree’s unique story. The results are seemingly abstract patterns that contain lines and markings full of intention, depth, and symmetry. As a result of Hurricane Sandy, Prospect Park lost over 500 trees. Each charcoal rubbing documents the lives of trees that existed within or around the Prospect Park area since that destructive storm.
